2022 Kingpin Cabernet Sauvignon is, as usual, a brooding monster, attacking with aromas of blackberry, roasted herbs, sweet oak, and minerals. Burly yet refined tannins support rich opulent flavors of black currant, blueberry, dark chocolate, baking spices, cedar and stone. Showy now, this blockbuster will astonish and amaze for generations. No really.
Food pairing: Grilled New York steak with gorgonzola butter, Gaga’s veggie stew balls (amazing!)
Movie pairing: The Godfather
FOUNDERS’ NOTES:
Launched in 2006, Kingpin celebrates the raw power and intensity of Red Mountain. Although we have no definitive conclusion on its ultimate life span due to the fact that we have only made it for 10 years or so and have none even beginning to peak, we suspect this is a wine that can be enjoyed for at least 30 years, if not many more.
"Principally Cabernet, with 3% each Malbec and Petit Verdot in the blend, this is where the stylistic approach of all the Sparkman reds really hits a home run. The sometimes rough ‘n’ ready Red Mountain tannins are nicely corralled – firm and textured, ripe but balanced against the dense flavors of cassis, plum and black cherry. They are wrapped in dark notes of char, black tea, tobacco and bitter chocolate. The wine merits the name, and can match up to other classics from Red Mountain." 94/100 Paul Gregutt
